Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. Her dream was to become a English teacher at high school. The dream however was ended when, after three years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. Then, during Roots performance she came out to be an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
